In those first matches, Tom Kenyon wrote the match results on a big board like you see here. If you look at the large image you can zoom in and see the groups of that time. Even back then after only holding 3 or 4 matches, people were shooting groups that were pretty respectable even by todays standards. Bill Miller is standing beside the board.
